Europe Day 2014

Europe Day (9 May) celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date is the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. During a speech in Paris in 1950, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman has exhibited his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would have made it unthinkable a war between European Nations.

His ambition was to create a European institution that would put together and managed the production of coal and steel. A treaty that gave birth to such an institution was signed just a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered the birth of the European Union.
